The incident happened just after 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 25, when Curtis Greene of Yonkers was seen walking with a large kitchen knife on North Broadway, heading toward Getty Square, which was crowded with pedestrians, the Yonkers Police Department announced on Friday, March 28.
Officers from the 4th Precinct Anti-Crime Unit initially tried to contain Greene and ordered him to drop the knife, the department said.
As Greene continued walking toward the crowded area and refused to listen to police commands, officers arrived on the scene and deployed their TASER devices, successfully hitting Greene and causing him to drop the knife and fall to the ground, according to authorities.
Officers quickly grabbed the knife and placed Greene under arrest, though police said he continued to struggle during the arrest.
The department later posted a video of the struggle on social media.
Greene was charged with:
- Criminal possession of a weapon;
- Menacing a police officer;
- Resisting arrest;
- Obstruction of governmental administration;
- Second-degree assault (for injuring an officer during the struggle, police said).
Police said other than the officer's injury, there were no injuries to Greene or the public.
