Saunders Football Building Winning Program

YONKERS, N.Y. - The Saunders Blue Devils are beginning to believe in their football program after winning their fourth straight game in two seasons with last Saturday's responding 58-8 victory against crosstown rival Lincoln.

The Blue Devils, who won the last two games of the 2011 season, are 2-0 thus far in 2012 with wins versus city teams Gorton (27-14) and Lincoln as they head into Saturday's 1:30 p.m. kickoff against visiting Peekskill at Tibbetts Park.

"We are trying to be focused on all parts of the game and get better on defense, offense and special teams." Saunders Quarterback Kirstian Prenga said. "Each game is important. We can't let down at all."

Saunders head coach Mel Carozza, who has been building the program the last two seasons, was not looking ahead to any long-range goals but was focused on the upcoming Peekskill game.

"This would be a good win for us," Carozza said of the Peekskill test. "If we can get a win here (and be 3-0), we can then point to Brewster. We will be playing some good teams as we go on."

The Saunders running game has been ignited by Francisco Wilson King, who has scored six touchdowns in the two wins, including four last week in the rout of Lincoln. Prenga completed 5 of 8 passes for 122 yards and two scores in the Lincoln win.

The Blue Devils defense looked strong last week and depends on a good senior group led by Keron Phillip, Eric Mfwodo and junior Nick Lugo.

Peekskill, which has lost to Lincoln, 12-6, and Hackley, 42-0, in its first two games, probably will not offer a big challenge to the resurgent Blue Devils who should stretch their winning streak to three games this week.
