YONKERS, N.Y. --  Up to 24 Yonkers school employees could lose their jobs next year due to a funding shortfall that is causing a tightening of next year's school budget, according to Yonkers Schools Superintendent Edwin Quezada.

Quezada, who is proposing a revised budget of $590.3 million, made the announcement on Tuesday, May 9 to members of the Board of Education, said Schools Spokeswoman Jerilynne Fierstein.

The superintendent said he did not want to make the cuts but did not have the money to sustain the current level of staffing.

The layoffs could include a combination of teachers, school counselors, and office staff, Fierstein confirmed.

First-year teachers would go first, along with planned retirements, and staff leaving for jobs elsewhere, she added.

Besides the 24 layoffs, the superintendent said he will eliminate another 23 positions that include current vacancies.

Board trustees accepted Quezada's recommendations, but did not offer any ideas or alternatives to prevent the cuts from happening, Fierstein said.

The board will adopt their final budget after the City Council adopts a combined city/school budget by June 1.
