The program will recognize Yonkers’ public schools and their students, teachers, administrators and staff for academic excellence, extracurricular achievement, athletic success and a commitment to the city through volunteerism.
“We have incredible schools in Yonkers and some of the most dedicated and talented administrators, teachers and staff around,” Spano said in a statement. “But it’s our students that truly set Yonkers apart. The students at Dodson not only excel academically, they are committed to volunteerism and giving back to the community.”
The mayor highlighted several volunteer efforts at the school:
- When a student was diagnosed with cancer last year, classmates organized a St. Baldrick’s Foundation Event during which nearly 100 students received haircuts and raised thousands of dollars for cancer research.
- Eighth-grade students recently raised more than $2,000 for the annual Dodson Breast Cancer Walkathon.
- Dodson students collected more than 230 pajamas and donated $150 to the Pajama Program.
- Students collected food to help the less fortunate during the Holiday Season.
"The Dodson School not only nurtures academic excellence, but also cultivates within its students a strength of character and an understanding of personal responsibility to the community," said Superintendent of Schools Bernard Pierorazio in a release. "I applaud the school, its students, families and staff, for this well-deserved honor."
