Yonkers Mayor Spano Launches 'Backpack To School' Program

YONKERS, N.Y.-- Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano has announced the start of the second annual "Backpack to School" drive, which will provide backpacks and other supplies to Yonkers Public School students in need.

The "Backpack to School" program provided more than 1,000 bags full of supplies for students in need last year. Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano is hoping to eclipse that number this year.

The drive began Aug. 5. Donations can be dropped off at any number of locations, including City Hall, Yonkers Riverfront Library, the Grinton I. Will Library, Crestwood Library and all four Yonkers police precincts.

“As our students begin to prepare for the start of the new school year, many parents are preparing for the cost of school supplies which can often be a significant expense,” Spano said in a statement. “Last year we were able to provide well over 1,000 backpacks stocked with school supplies to Yonkers students in need. I’m encouraging our city to come together once again this year with the goal of assuring all students are equipped with the supplies they need to succeed.”

Suggested donations include new or "like new" backpacks filled with supplies, including crayons, colored pencils, loose leaf paper, rulers, pens, composition books, pocket folders, glue sticks and No. 2 pencils.

"The beginning of the school year conjures excitement within our students, who eagerly anticipate new supplies for the new year. The outpouring of support from the Yonkers community and generous donors will translate into smiles on our children’s faces and ensure the students are prepared for a productive year of learning," Yonkers Superintendent Bernard Pierorazio said in a statement.

The drive is scheduled to continue through Aug. 27.
