All Yonkers Schools To Re-Open Monday

YONKERS, N.Y. - All Yonkers public schools will be open Monday.

All schools in the Yonkers Public School district will be open Monday.

All schools in the Yonkers Public School district will be open Monday.

After five days of closure in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, the district announced Sunday morning that all its schools will be powered up and classes will resume Monday.

“We are eager to welcome our students and staff back to their classrooms and restore a sense of normalcy to our school community,” Superintendent of Schools Bernard Pierorazio said in a statement.

On Saturday, the district said five schools remained without power and would not open until it was restored. Since then, however, Paideia School 15, School 21 and Scholastic Academy have regained power, the district said.

If the remaining two schools, Casimir Pulaski and Family School 32, are not fully restored with electricity by Monday, they will be powered by flatbed generators, a move the superintendent has requested and authorized.

When schools do re-open Monday, it will mark the first time in a week that students have been in the classroom since Hurricane Sandy.

Although the school buildings incurred minimal damage, some experienced loss of power, the district said. Officials said they were also concerned about unsafe travel conditions for students due to fallen trees and downed electrical wires throughout the city.

To make up one school day, Tuesday, which had originally been scheduled as a professional development day for staff, will now serve as a full day of instruction for students.

In addition, students who had been registered for the canceled SAT exam Saturday at Roosevelt High School will be able to transfer their registration to another exam date at no charge, school officials said.
