Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano was joined by other local officials and developers recently to break ground on an Avalon Bay development project that will become Avalon Yonkers, the future home of nearly 600 rental units on the city’s waterfront.

Officials noted that future residents of Avalon Yonkers will have direct access “to the city’s growing esplanade.” The development is located near the Yonkers Metro-North station and will be located near new shops, restaurants and bars that are scheduled to be opening up in the area.

The development is expected to be completed next year. Avalon Yonkers marks the first major development of the Alexander Street Master Plan.

"This is precisely the type of development we need in Yonkers to meet a growing demand for people who want to live in a diverse and urban environment while enjoying our beautiful Hudson River," Spano said.  "Avalon Bay is a shining example of the great things we see blossoming here in Yonkers -- a place for families as well as young millennials who are looking for quality and convenience where they live, work and play."
