Mayor Mike Spano announced Monday the creation of a Yonkers Youth Advisory Board, a collection of seven people between the ages of 16 and 21.
The board, he said, will work to create and recommend effective policies, programs and projects to continue youth development in the city.
“It is incumbent upon our government to embrace the young people of Yonkers, their ideas, talents and energy to make a positive impact on others in the community,” said Spano. “I look forward to meeting, working and developing a forum within Yonkers in which we can debate and decide issues that intricately affect the lives of our youth.”
Interested civic conscious young people can apply for the board positions, consisting of six members to represent each council district and one member to serve at-large, beginning Monday by submitting a resume online
Once chosen and convened by Spano, the board will elect a chairperson, a vice chairperson, a secretary and other such officers, the mayor’s office said. Each member will serve for a one-year term.
“The young people of our great City have so much to offer,” Spano said. “Through the new Youth Advisory Board, we will be sure to harness the best and the brightest of Yonkers and offer effective and lasting initiatives for our leaders of tomorrow.”
Responsibilities of the Yonkers Youth Advisory Board will include acting as a liaison between the city and various youth related organizations, recommending policies and programs for the prevention and control of juvenile delinquency and youth crime.
They will also work to encourage closer cooperation between employers, labor, schools, private and public agencies to stimulate employment for the youth, Spano said.
The mayor is expected to complete the Youth Advisory selection process in the coming months.
