Yonkers Pays $15,000 After Woman Falls In Manhole

YONKERS, N.Y. – Yonkers officials decided to avoid trial and fork over thousands of dollars to a woman who took a plunge into a Radford Street manhole.

The Yonkers City Council voted unanimously, and without comment, last week to approve a $15,000 payment to Bonnie Ramey, a city woman who took a spill when negligent city workers left a manhole opening uncovered, her lawsuit said.

The settlement offer comes after Ramey filed a lawsuit against the city in September 2009 in state Supreme Court in White Plains, claiming she suffered mental and physical damage from the incident.

In the lawsuit, Ramey said she was walking along Radford Street on Sept. 19, 2008, when she attempted to cross the street near the Elliott Street intersection.  That’s when she accidentally stepped into the manhole and took a plunge down the open pit, Ramey said.

After taking the spill, Ramey said she became “sick, sore, lame and disabled,” suffered mental and physical damage and was unable to perform normal duties at her work.

What’s more, she said the city was well aware of the hazardous opening, receiving written letters complaining about the missing cover in the past, according to the lawsuit.

Ramey and her husband were asking for the city to be held responsible for medical costs and award her compensation for damages in an amount to be determined in court.
