Rep. Eliot Engel (D-Bronx) announced the FEMA funding earlier this week. The money will be used to pay for the removal of more than 30,000 yards of hazardous debris dumped in city parks and roads during the October storm.

“Help has been badly needed in Yonkers, all of Westchester, and across the Metropolitan area,” Engel said in a statement. “I am very pleased to see Yonkers obtain this FEMA grant to enable the city to continue its efforts to recover from the storm, and to help pay for the work already completed.”

At the height of the Oct. 29 storm, gusts reached 80 miles per hour, knocking down an estimated 400 trees and blocking countless roads throughout the city.

City officials said the funding was sorely needed.

“I want to thank our Congressional delegation for their steadfast dedication in securing these funds which will continue our Sandy recovery efforts in Yonkers,” Mayor Mike Spano said.
