YONKERS, N.Y. – Republican county legislators were able to get a commitment for a vote on a lease for a proposed new facility for Yonkers Family Court at the Board of Legislators meeting scheduled for Aug. 10.

The Infrastructure Committee met Tuesday, and committee members Legislators Michael Smith (R-Pleasantville) and Sheila Marcotte (R-Eastchester) made a motion to have the board vote on the lease.

Board Majority Leader Catherine Borgia (D-Ossining) and Legislator MaryJane Shimsky (D-Hastings-On-Hudson) wanted the issue tabled for the time being, wanting more time and information.

Legislator Bernice Spreckman (R-Yonkers) argued that 'political grandstanding' could move the vote back further, so Smith and Marcotte were willing to table the motion in exchange for a commitment from Board Chairman Michael Kaplowitz (D-Somers) that the issue would be discussed at the Aug. 10 meeting.

Spreckman insisted that the longtime issue needed to be resolved.

“The current facility is in terrible condition and has significant security issues. The people who rely on this facility are our neighbors who are facing some of the most stressful and painful situations of their lives. I will not stand by and allow further political grandstanding and gamesmanship while those families suffer.”

“This move has been discussed for more than five years now. It is time to pass this agreement so we can move the Yonkers Family Court to a better facility that will help ensure the safety, security and dignity of those residents who need the services of Family Court and other county agencies.” Marcotte added.
