McLaughlin, a Republican, hosted a campaign launch party Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at the Sprain Lake Golf Club.
An attorney, McLaughlin served 10 years on the Yonkers City Council, including a stint as a Majority Leader, before being term limited out in 2010. That same year he lost a bid for the 35th District seat in the New York State Senate to Andrea Stewart-Cousins.
McLaughlin had been a popular name among GOP leaders in recent weeks as the party looks to field a contender to fill the City Council President’s seat in an election this November.
The city’s second most prestigious position will be open at the end of this year as current president Chuck Lesnick is prevented from seeking re-election by the city’s term limits.
Several candidates are rumored to be considering a run but thus far, just three have publicly announced their intentions.
Among the pool of candidates will be Park Avenue Elevator Design owner and Democrat Frank Spotorno.
Also in the hunt is Democratic candidate Mike Rotanelli. The Transit Auto Towing owner, who unsuccessfully ran for the council’s Third District seat in 2011, announced his plan to run in January.
“I am running for City Council president to bring fresh idea and leadership to a changing city,” he said in a promotional video released last week.
Both Democrats and the GOP will hold conventions in the upcoming months to determine who their nominated candidates will be.
