At approximately 4 a.m. on Monday morning, a general alarm - meaning every on-duty firefighter from every company responds - was issued at the former Alexander Smith Carpet building on the corner of Nepperhan and Lake Avenues, which now houses local artists and businesses.
According to Yonkers officials, there was heavy fire on three floors upon arrival. It took 80 firefighters from 18 local companies several hours to knock the flames down and get the scene under control. No injuries have been reported.
Nepperhan Avenue remains closed in both directions from Torre Place to Axminter Street. According to police, southbound lanes may reopen on Monday Afternoon. Saw Mill River Road is also closed from Palmer Road to Ashburton Avenue.
Streets will reopen as the Yonkers Fire Department operations begin to wind down. Motorists have been asked to avoid the area during the afternoon commute home. Both the Board of Education and Westchester County Bee Line have been notified of the closures.
Companies remained on scene early on Monday morning putting out pockets of fire and to provide assistance for any flare-ups. The fire remains under investigation.
