The Yonkers Police Department is warning local homeowners to be on alert after a scam involving a Chase Bank advertisement surfaced in the city.

The Yonkers Police Department issued an alert on Thursday warning of a scam involving a Chase Bank promotion that includes the advertisement of monetary awards for opening a new checking or savings account.

According to police, the scam involves a suspect, apparently dressed in unauthorized Chase Bank employee apparel, approaching susceptible victims outside a Chase Bank and pushing the promotion. Police said that the suspects ask for the victim’s debit card and PIN in order to open new accounts with the promise of receiving the monetary award.

Instead, police said, the suspects simply take off from the area with the victim’s card and information, never having to enter the bank before emptying bank accounts.

Incidents have been recently reported involving the Chase Bank on South Broadway, with the suspects’ interactions taking place down the block near the intersection of South Broadway and Prospect Street. Police said the scam may apply to other bank branches.

Police said that residents should never give out bank cards, PIN numbers or personal information unless they are “engaged in a willing transaction in an established place of business or with a trusted company or agent.”

“Please verify the employee’s identification before transacting with anyone on a public street or sidewalk, or even better enter the bank or business and speak with an employee behind the counter,” police said. “Scammers are constantly coming up with new methods to defraud victims – before handing over your money or personal information, verify the identity of the person you are dealing with.”
