“The City of Yonkers is proud to be one our nation’s safest cities, and will continue to prosper with the emergence of a new class of police officers who will protect our residents and continue to keep our streets safe,” Spano said in the statement. “This is a great opportunity for qualified residents to contribute to the well-being of our community and join the ranks of one the best and most successful law enforcement agencies in the country.”

The creation of a new class of police recruits marks continuing success for the department during a year in which crime rates have reached a seven year low, according to a recent report by the FBI. Yonkers is considered the fourth safest city out of more than 100 of America’s most populous cities.

“We are looking for a diverse group of candidates to take our upcoming police exam," Charles Gardner, Yonkers Police Commisssioner, added in the statement. "This is a great career opportunity with one of the most respected police departments in the country. Those who would like to be part of our team and help to serve our citizens here in Yonkers should sign up for the exam.”

All interested candidates between the ages of 18 and 35 years old and who are legal residents of Westchester, Nassau, Putnam, Rockland and Bronx counties are encouraged to download an application from the City’s website at www.yonkersny.gov or obtain a copy at Yonkers City Hall (40 S. Broadway), Yonkers Police Headquarters (104 S. Broadway), and at the four local police precincts throughout the City.

Applications may be submitted in person or mailed to the Civil Service Office at Yonkers City Hall Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or submitted in person at the Yonkers Community Affairs Division (36 Radford Street), Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturdays 9 a.m. through 5 p.m.

The Yonkers Police Department will provide civil service study classes for Yonkers applicants starting this fall. Preference in appointment will be given to Yonkers residents who have resided in the City for at least three months immediately preceding the date of the written exam on Nov. 16 and continuously up to and including the date of appointment.

Upon selection of those who passed the police exam, police recruits will be expected to undergo rigorous classroom and on-the-job training to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to enforce laws and protect lives within the City of Yonkers.

The City of Yonkers last administered the police exam in 2009. For more information, visit www.yonkerspd.com
