On Thursday, Yonkers Police Det. Lt. Patrick McCormack announced that they had arrested Yonkers resident Anthony Alexander, 33, after he was stopped by plainclothes officers working with the department’s Pattern Crime Unit in the 3rd Precinct on Wednesday night.
According to police, at approximately 8:15 p.m. on Wednesday, officers observed a suspicious man in the area of Cochran Park, displaying what appeared to be a handgun. A foot pursuit ensued and a member of the Pattern Crimes Unit - who is a 13-year veteran of the department - discharged a round from his weapon in the direction of Alexander, who was not struck.
Alexander was taken into custody by the Pattern Crimes Unit - which conducts crime suppression activities based on recent crime analysis - and a loaded 9mm handgun was recovered at the scene. He was charged with felony count of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
No injuries were reported as a result of the discharged round. Alexander was remanded to Yonkers City Jail and is scheduled to be arraigned in Yonkers Criminal Court on Thursday.
Members of the Detective Division processed the scene for evidence and the Yonkers Police Department Internal Affairs Division is investigating, as per standard procedure. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
