Barnett was charged with allegedly killing David Benitez on April 18. At 6:27 a.m. that day, Yonkers police said they received a 911 call from a security guard at the Schlobohm Houses apartment complex who said a man was at the gate with a knife attempting to stab another man.
The guard said the assailant, later identified as Barnett, chased Benitez down a ramp leading to the apartment buildings, police said.
Surveillance video taken from a nearby deli shows Barnett running up to the victim and plunging what appeared to be a large kitchen knife into his back, police said. Benitez ran toward the apartment complex with Barnett chasing him, police said. Benitez was able to lock the apartment complex's rear gate, allowing him to escape from Barnett, police said.
Yonkers police responded to the rear gate and said they found Benitez bleeding heavily. He was taken to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx, where he died two hours later, police said.
Barnet was arrested soon after at a nearby gas station, police said. The knife was recovered on the roof of a nearby building, police said.
Barnett's next court appearance is set for June 30.
If found guilty, he faces a maximum of 25 years to life in prison.
