The fire officer was conducting a primary search in the basement of a home at 104 Vineyard Ave. when he was burned, Assistant Fire Chief Kyran Dunn said. He was taken to St. John’s Hospital and was expected to be released Monday evening, fire officials said.
Firefighters responded to the blaze at the two-story home at 7:43 p.m. The fire had started in a basement apartment and was quickly spreading to the first floor, Dunn said.
Fifty-one firefighters fought the flames and were able to contain it mostly to the basement and the apartment above, officials said.
The blaze was knocked down shortly before 8:30 p.m. “It was a very aggressive and very coordinated attack,” Dunn said.
Six residents living in the building’s three apartments evacuated by the time firefighters arrived and suffered no injuries, Dunn said. Four firefighters were being treated for moderate to minor injuries, according to Assistant Chief John Flynn.
The man living in the basement apartment was not able to return to his apartment Monday night, Flynn said.
The damage to the other two apartments was still being assessed and firefighters were expected to decide shortly if those residents would be able to return to their homes.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
