Shortly after 9 a.m. on Friday, Yonkers fire crews responded to a structure fire at 1160 Midland Ave., where two victims required CPR and were hospitalized in critical condition. Several firefighters were reportedly also suffered "less severe" injuries.
According to Yonkers officials, the fire took place on the fourth floor, prompting "an aggressive attack and a coordinated search" that yielded the two victims, who were removed to the lobby by firefighters. They were treated at the scene and transported to Jacobi Medical Center. Their status remains unclear.
The two-alarm fire was knocked down in under an hour. Three other civilians were treated for lesser injuries, as were three firefighters. The blaze was contained to the original unit, while neighboring apartments suffered water and fire damage.
While battling the fire on Midland Avenue, firefighters were also called to St. John’s Riverside Hospital, where a refrigerator was reportedly also on fire.
