The fire, which started at 2 a.m. Wednesday, at 951 McLean Ave., in a second-floor apartment, spread into the walls, trapping six people on the third-floor who were rescued by firefighters, said Yonkers Fire Commissioner Robert Sweeney.
"We have fire investigators on the scene, but believe the fire is a result of a careless smoker on the second floor," Sweeney said.
The seven tenants and injured firefighters were taken to Jacobi Hospital with injuries ranging from burned feet and hands, to smoke inhalation and heat exhaustion. One woman, who suffered cardiac arrest is in critical, but stable condition this morning, Sweeney said.
"All of the firefighters are fine," he added.
