YONKERS, N.Y. A Friday night fire that ripped through a Woodworth Avenue building and left six families homeless may have been intentionally set, fire officials said Monday.
Yonkers Deputy Fire Chief John Flynn declined to give specifics about the case but said officials have reason to suspect arson.
Everything that were seeing now points to the fact that it was intentionally set, he said.
The fire at 216 Woodworth Ave. began around 9:30 p.m. in a first-floor apartment that a resident and neighbors say belongs to the buildings superintendent. The flames spread through the first floor of the building and up the rear, into the second and third floors of the three-story home.
All of the 16 residents escaped unharmed but seven firefighters were injured while fighting the flames, fire officials said Sunday. The Red Cross assisted five of the families with money and four were given emergency housing at a nearby hotel, agency representatives said.
Flynn said fire officials continue to work with the Yonkers Police Department, collecting evidence and interviewing people.
