Fire Capt. Robert Smith had recently finished his shift at Station No. 9 on Shonnard Place, according to a press release.
He said he was driving northbound on the Saw Mill River Parkway and saw a pickup truck hydroplaning out of control.
The truck then hit a guardrail and landed on its side in the Saw Mill River, fire officials said.
Smith, along with several other “Good Samaritans” were able to get the man and woman inside of the truck out safely, said fire department spokesman Thomas F. Fitzpatrick Jr.
The man, believed to be in his 40s, and the woman, believed to be in her 30s, were checked out by paramedics and did not need to be transported for further treatment, according to Fitzpatrick.
“If not for the quick action of Captain Smith and others the outcome may have been different,” Fitzpatrick added.
