YONKERS, N.Y. - Several Yonkers residents were left out in the snow on Friday morning following a three-alarm fire that tore through a multi-family home on Riverview Place.

Fire officials confirmed that firefighters were dispatched to a four-story building on Riverview Place, where there was a reported fire in the wall of a unit that swiftly spread. The fire began at approximately 6:30 a.m. and crews had it knocked down before 9 a.m.

Yonkers Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Ford noted that the building was set back from the narrow street, making it more difficult for crews to gain access. He added that "because the rear porches were covered with plywood, as well as sheetrock, it was very difficult to open up the walls to look for the hidden fire, which spread to three floors.

Ford said that the fire was contained to the rear of the building, but there was heavy water damage to all of the apartments. The building currently cannot be occuped until the water damage is cleaned up and the back steps are restored.

Residents in the building were evacuated safely, and no injuries were immediately reported. The American Red Cross has opened up the nearby Community Center as a reception center to serve “as a warm haven from the wintry weather for the (displaced) families to congregate and meet with volunteers.” It is estimated that more than two dozen people have been displaced.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Keep following Daily Voice for updates.
