City Manager Charles Strome III announced that Andrew Sandor has been named the new full-time Chief, effective as of Sept. 1. He had served as the department’s interim Fire Chief since former Chief Lou DiMeglio announced he was stepping down on June 29 after more than four decades of service in the city.

A 22-year veteran of the department, Sandor quickly rose through the ranks since becoming a probationary firefighter in 1996. He was named a Lieutenant in 20002 and a Captain in 2008. During his time in the department, Sandor served in all five fire stations in New Rochelle.

Sandor has a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Iona College, as well as an associate’s degree in Fire Science from Corning Community College. He also served as a New York State and Westchester County Fire Instructor for several years. He is scheduled to be ceremonially sworn in during the department’s annual ceremony in October.

Strome said that “(he) looks forward to working closely with Andy Sandor as our new Fire Chief. I am confident he will continue and enhance the reputation of the New Rochelle Fire Department as being the finest in the State of New York.”
