He died in an off-duty collision with a Yonkers firetruck, which was responding to a call.
Born in Cuba, Fernandez graduated from Lincoln High School. He was a proud member of the Yonkers Police Department for over 15 years, serving as a detective for the last eight years.
"The entire Yonkers community mourns the loss of Det. Frank Fernandez," Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano said in a statement. "A 15-year veteran of the Department, Frank was a dedicated officer, husband and father. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Fernandez family."
He is survived by his wife, Alex Fernandez; children David and Daniel; parents Nazael and Nuvia (Garcia) Fernandez; brother Nazael "Sid" Fernandez; and nephews Anthony, Nicholas and Andrew.
Visiting hours will be from 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 17, and from 2-9 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 18, at the Whalen & Ball Funeral Home, 168 Park Ave., in Yonkers. A mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church on Friday, Feb. 19. Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery.
