Yonkers Barber Silvestro Filancia Dies at 94

YONKERS, N.Y. – Silvestro Filancia, a longtime Yonkers barber, died July 24. He was 94. 

Born to Pietro and Clementina DiVito Filancia, he was married to Gena Germani Filancia. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Filancia was the owner of Silvestro's Barber Shop on Central Avenue for more than 50 years before retiring. 

Filancia also was an avid racing fan and was well-known by Yonkers Raceway employees and friends. 

He was predeceased by a daughter, Maria Taylor; four brothers, Sal, Robert, Italo and Gemmino Filancia; three sisters, Antonetta Gurka, Giovanna Coccia and Maria Dora Filancia. He is survived by a son-in-law, Dr. Kevin Taylor; a brother-in-law, Rocco (Ann) Germani; two grandsons; and many nieces and nephews. 

Visitation is from 1-5 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Flower Funeral Home in Yonkers. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at St. John the Baptist Church. Burial will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery.
