Rita Jewell, 90, Lifelong Yonkers Resident

YONKERS, N.Y. - Rita Jewell (nee Condon), a lifelong Yonkers resident, died Oct. 9. She was 90.

Jewell was born June 4, 1923, to Richard and Agnes Sullivan Condon in Yonkers where she was raised and attended St. Peter's Grade School and graduated from Sacred Heart High School. She was an administrative assistant for Hudson View Nursing Home for 40 years retiring at age 80. She was a member of the Yonkers Republican Party and a secretary for the Yonkers Republican City Committee. She was the first woman inducted into the Yonkers Kiwanis Club. She was a longtime parishioner of Sacred Heart Church, was active in the Mother's Guild and was on the board of the Parish Council.

Jewell is survived by her children, Kathleen Slanzi, Mary Ellen Whalen, Richard (Natalie) Jewell, Elizabeth (James W.) Curtis, Patricia (Joseph) Yasinski, Veronica (Stan) Stolarski, Virginia (Fred) Scialabba and Anthony (Christine) Jewell; brother, Br. Augustine Condon, S.S.P.; sisters, Anita Mooney and Jean Gebert; 23 grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Sargent J. Jewell; sister, Gladys Clark; brother, John Condon; and son in law, Frank Slanzi.

Calling hours are Friday, Oct. 11 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Whalen & Ball Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday Oct. 12 in Sacred Heart Church. Interment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery.
