YONKERS, N.Y. -- Rita Gross Nelson, Yonkers' first female black police officer, passed away on Wednesday, according to Lohud.com. She was 77.
Nelson began her law enforcement career as a parking official in 1964 and was named a policewoman in 1965. She worked in juvenile aid and community affairs and also held the rank of detective. Nelson retired from the force in 1986, Lohud.com reported.
