YONKERS, N.Y. – Joseph Giannelli of Yonkers died Dec. 2. He was 89.
He was born Jan. 12, 1923, in Yonkers to Antonio and Anna Pepe Giannelli. He graduated from Saunders High School and worked as a self-employed machinist with J&E Machinery in Hastings.
On Aug. 16, 1947, Giannelli married Betty Denness at Sacred Heart Church. He served in the Army during World War II in the European theater in Germany and was stationed with Gen. George Patton's Third Army. He received the Purple Heart.
Giannelli was a member of the Alan F. Waite American Legion Post and the 101st Infantry Reunion in Buffalo. He was parishioner of Sacred Heart Church and a former president of the Sixth Ward Republican Party and the Weston Park Civic Association. Giannelli was also a member of Holy Name Society and was a founding member of the North Yonkers Boys & Girls Club.
He is survived by his wife; three sons, Joseph (Tina), of Rhode Island, Denis (Marge), of Yonkers, and Tony (Mary Beth), of Yonkers; a brother, Frank; and eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by seven sisters, Angela Montone, Bernadetta Rondanone, Josephine Rondanone, Immaculata Giannella, Ida Russack, Francesca Giannelli and Antionetta Giannelli.
Visitation is 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Whalen and Ball Funeral Home in Yonkers. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Church. Burial will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Yonkers.
