Joan Tompkins, 82, Yonkers Native

YONKERS, N.Y. – Joan Marie Whalen Tompkins, a Yonkers native, died Jan. 1 after a brief illness. She was 82.

Tompkins was born Sept. 20, 1930, in Yonkers to John J. and Margaret Nagle Whalen. She attended Sacred Heart High School before graduating from Blessed Sacrament High School in Yonkers.

She married William L. Tompkins in Yonkers on June 23, 1954. They raised six children together. She most recently lived in Glenwood, N.Y.

A homemaker, Tompkins was known for her easy laugh, the twinkle in her eye and her quick wit, her family said. She was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and New York Rangers.

Tompkins is survived by her children, Mary (William) Saunders, of Charlottesville, Va., Ellen (Doug) Thibodo, of Minneapolis, William (Valerie) Tompkins, of Bronxville, Noreen (Steve) Rollins, of Glenwood, John (Sharon) Tompkins, of Basking Ridge, N.J., and Eileen Tompkins, of San Francisco; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by three sisters, Catherine "Kay" Whalen Houlihan, of Hartsdale, Margaret "Margie" Whalen Hermann, of Hartsdale, and Mary "Honey" Whalen Dahlgren, of White Plains; a brother, John Whalen, of Liberty, N.Y.; and many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Monday at St. Joseph’s Church in Croton Falls. Clark Associates Funeral Home in Katonah handled arrangements.
