Dorothy Turchinsky, 78, Retired Teacher, Yonkers Resident

YONKERS, N.Y. -- Dorothy Anne Turchinsky (nee Bradley), of Yonkers, died Monday, Aug. 24, at age 78.

Turchinsky was born Jan. 8, 1937, to Stephen and Arlene (O'Hagan) Bradley in Astoria, Queens, where she was raised and graduated from Long Island City High School. She received her B.S. in education from Fordham University and her master's degree in education from SUNY Plattsburg.

She was an elementary school teacher for the Yonkers Board of Education for over 30 years, retiring in 1996.

On Feb. 6, 1960, she married Adrew Turchinsky in Most Precious Blood Church. He died in 1986.

She was a parishioner of St. Michael's Ukrainian Church, co-chair of the Yonkers Ukrainian Festival, member of the Slovenian American League, American Irish Teachers Association, Ukrainian Youth Center, Hudson River Museum and s supporter of Doctors Without Borders.

She is survived by three daughters, Anne (Thomas Trocchia) Turchinsky, Masha (Taylor) Pierce and Lara (Johannes) Schouten; and two grandchildren, Konstantin and Olena.

Visiting will be Wednesday, Aug. 26, and Thursday, Aug. 27, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Whalen and Ball Funeral Home, 168 Park Ave., Yonkers. There will be an evening service Thursday at 7:30 p.m. The funeral service will be held Friday, Aug. 28, at 9:30 a.m. in St. Michaels Catholic Ukrainian Church. Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Maspeth, Queens. Donations may be made to the scholarship fund at Fordham University.
