Celso Hernandez, 89, Yonkers Resident

YONKERS, N.Y. – Celso Hernandez of Yonkers died Sunday, April 3. He was 89.

He was born Feb. 8, 1927, in Puerto Rico, where he was raised and educated. He came to America at age 18. He was a chef at the Parker-Meridian Hotel in New York City for over 40 years and retired in 1994. On Sept. 1, 1951, he married Carmen Pizarro in St. Joseph's Church in the Bronx. She preceded him in death in 2006. He belonged to Local 6 of the hotel and restaurant union in New York City.

He is survived by his daughter, Yolanda (Caesar) Gonzalez, of Yonkers; his granddaughter, Stephanie; and five siblings in Puerto Rico.

Visiting hours will be held Thursday, April 7, from 2-9 p.m. at Whalen & Ball Funeral Home, 168 Park Ave., Yonkers. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Friday, April 8, at 10 a.m. A committal service will take place at Ferncliff Chapel.
