The Cacace Justice Center Jail, built 22 years ago but never used, has been upgraded to current standards and includes an integrated security system to streamline operations and enhance safety, city officials said. Police and detention personnel can now manage and monitor all prisoner activity from arrival, through housing, to court appearance and departure from a main control center within the jail.

The new jail system is the elimination of the process of transporting prisoners from the Alexander Street jail to the Cacace Center for court proceedings, as prisoners will now be located at the same site as the City Courts, Spano said.

“This project is about applying good, common-sense to operating government,” Spano said in a statement. “For 22 years, Yonkers has been holding old chairs and boxes of files prisoner in a perfectly good jail facility at the Cacace Center while housing real prisoners in an 86 year-old building on prime real estate along our waterfront. Today, Yonkers will realize the true potential of these underutilized properties.”

The 86-year-old Alexander Street building will be sold for redevelopment.

The City is already actively marketing the old jail building on Alexander Street for development consistent with other projects taking place in the Downtown-Waterfront district.
