YONKERS, NY City officials are looking to make the farmers market an affordable option for all of Yonkers seniors citizens.
Mayor Mike Spano announced Thursday that the Yonkers Office for the Aging will distribute farmers market coupons to low-income Yonkers seniors beginning July 30. The coupons will be available at the Office for the Aging on Mondays and Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Chema Center, 435 Riverdale Ave.
Seniors will be able to redeem the coupons at farmers markets throughout the area, including the city-owned market at St. Johns Church, in Getty Square at South Broadway and Hudson Street.
City officials said the markets give Yonkers residents the opportunity to buy New York farm grown products directly from the farmers, something that is especially important in lower-income and underserved areas.
We encourage our seniors to make use of this money-saving service that will entice them to get out and shop, contribute to our local farms, while enjoying the benefits of fresh, homegrown produce and products, the mayors office said in a news release.
The coupons will be available to applicants 60 years or older and who are currently receiving or eligible to receive SSI, public assistance, food stamps, Section 8 housing subsidy.
Seniors who earn a monthly income of $1,722 per month or less for a one person household; $ 2,333 per month or less for a two person household and $ 2,943 per month or less for a three person household will also be eligible, the mayors office announced.
No appointments are needed but a photo ID and proof of age and Yonkers residency are required. There will be a one booklet per household limit.
