In an effort to prevent prescription pill abuse and theft, the Yonkers Police Department will be one of thousands across the country Saturday participating in the federal Drug Enforcement Administration’s “National Take-Back Initiative.”
Yonkers police will collect potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs at the four precincts from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
Residents can drop the medications into collection bins that will be located in each precinct front-desk area, free of charge and anonymously, no questions asked.
The Yonkers Police Department has participated in every DEA “Take-Back Initiative” since it was created in 2010.
During the more recent collection drive, in September, citizens throughout the United States turned in 244 tons of unwanted or expired medications for safe and proper disposal. In total, the DEA has collected more than 2 million pounds of medications in the past two years.
“Our take-back events highlight the problems related to prescription drug abuse and give our citizens an opportunity to contribute to the solution,” DEA Administrator Michele Leonhart said.
In Yonkers, residents can respond to the following four precinct locations to drop off prescription drugs:
1st Precinct – 730 E. Grassy Sprain Road, 914-377-7477, 2nd Precinct – 441 Central Park Ave., 914-377-7452, 3rd Precinct – 435 Riverdale Ave., 914-377-7427, 4th Precinct – 53 Shonnard Place, 914-377-7402.
