The two Explorers, Penelope Urbina and Miguel Molina, both Yonkers residents, will be plunging into the icy waters to raise money for Special Olympics New York athletes, said Detective Lt. Patrick McCormack.
“Our Explorers do great work here in our city as they are learning about a possible career in law enforcement," McCormack said. "Raising money for charities such as Special Olympics New York has been a tradition here in our department for quite some time and we are glad that these two YPD Explorers have stepped up for the Polar Plunge, they are both expressing a desire to help others, this is what being a Yonkers Police Officer is all about.”
The Yonkers Police Department Explorer Program includes area teens from 14- to 19-years-old interested in a career in law enforcement. The program is part of a national program affiliated with the Boy Scouts of America.
"We instruct our Explorers on local laws, police tactics, and our community. Our Explorers also actively participate to help our department with many community events including National Night Out, the Yonkers Marathon, and local parades," he added.
There are currently 12 YPD Explorers assigned to the Community Affairs unit.
