Scores of local children, their parents and members of the community attended the ribbon cutting, in addition to state Sen. Andrea Stewart-Cousins (D-Yonkers) and Yonkers City Council members Christopher Johnson and Corazon Pineda. The newest garden came about through a partnership with the Yonkers Community Action Program, with specific dedicated start-up funding from the Westchester Community Foundation.
The new garden also features partnerships with Catholic Charities and Obreros Unidos, who all have worked together during the past several months to transform this dilapidated and trash-filled space into a garden that features 25 garden beds and will serve hundreds of local children and their families.
This community garden is a great addition to the Yonkers community," said Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano, who planted one of the first new vegetable plants. "It is a place where our kids can play outdoors and learn about the environment by participating in sustainability efforts.”
Greyston President and CEO Steven Brown said, “Greyston’s Community Gardens have been providing environmental programs and safe green spaces for individuals and families to come together for over 20 years.
“Led by the extraordinary Lucy Moreno-Casanova, the gardens allot people to participate fully in their community, learn about nutrition and grow fresh fruits and vegetables.”
