According to multiple reports, Comey will officially be nominated Friday afternoon.
Comey would replace Robert Mueller, who has served for 12 years. Following a formal nomination, Comey would have to be confirmed by the Senate.
Comey served as Deputy Attorney General, the second-highest ranking official in the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) and ran the day-to-day operations of the Department, from December 2003 through August 2005. He was U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York prior to becoming Deputy Attorney General.
