Yonkers' Rashad Morris Gives Back Basketball Knowledge

YONKERS, N.Y. — Rashad Morris played his basketball at Saunders High School in Yonkers and learned the game on inner-city blacktop courts where the lessons came in tough 3-on-3 battles with lots of pushing and shoving.

Morris now uses Pro Style Basketball Workouts to train small groups and individuals at the North Yonkers Boys & Girls Club and larger groups and clinics at the Yonkers YMCA. He also just completed his first season as an assistant at Hastings High School under first-year girls basketball head coach Joseph Keolamphu.

"Basketball meant everything to me and it opened avenues and venues for me that I might not have ever known," Morris said. "Like any community, there are people who haven't crossed outside the Yonkers and Westchester borders, and basketball has taken me across this whole country."

Morris knows the game from personal success at every level. He is second on the all-time scoring list at Saunders, where he played from 1990-1994. He went on to play at Columbia Greene Community College and Utica College before playing professionally with the American Basketball Association’s Jacksonville, Fla., team and the Atlantic Coast Professional Basketball League's Port Chester franchise.

"My motivation comes from the fact that I was able to do some great things in life because of basketball," Morris said. "If I was able to get the coaching that I am offering [young players], I think I may have done more."

Morris believes the discipline of sports complements a young athlete's education and offers developmental skills that will bring success. This summer, he is working his skill training program at the Yonkers YMCA and InTech Academy in Bronx (230th/Tibbetts Ave. off Broadway) as well as at basketball camp at the North Yonkers Boys & Girls Club.

“The best thing any athlete can do to help themselves is to master basic drills, including working on drills learned during sessions in their off-time,” said Morris. “We work on ball handling, dribbling and proper shooting, starting with age 10 players.”
