Jose Contreras, 53, shot his wife, Sharon Contreras, in the chest on Oct. 12, 2013 while the two were arguing, the district attorney's office said. Police responded to reports of gunshots and found Sharon Contreras in the hallway of their apartment building on the 11th floor. Jose Contreras had fled the scene, but was later found nearby, the district attorney said.

“This shooting was the product of years of arguments, fights and abuse. Although the defendant’s wife was the principal victim his actions affected their children who now must live with the loss of their mother and the fact that their father will now effectively spend the rest of his life in prison,” DiFiore said in a statement.

Jose Contreras pleaded guilty to one count of manslaughter in November.
