Yonkers Hurricane Sandy Cleanup, Power Outages Continue

YONKERS, N.Y. – Power outages, gas shortages and restoration effects are still underway in Yonkers, and officials continue to ask residents to exercise caution and help their neighbors.

Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano says the city is slowing returning to normal after Hurricane Sandy.

More than 14,000 remained without power in the city on Saturday as city officials announced several showering facilities were opening and schools expected to open Monday.

“For those like my family who remain without power, the frustration continues to build, but Yonkers is tough,” Mayor Mike Spano said. “We've faced tough times before and I am confident we will come out of this a stronger city.”

More than $3 million in damage has been reported so far, Spano said. Crews are still working to clear trees and downed wires. The city has set up three additional organic waste yards, and officials say they've cleaned about 450 tons of debris each day—double the normal rate.

Four schools had no power on Saturday, although Spano said Con Edison was working to get them ready for Monday. The city-wide gas rationing will continue until additional fuel supplies begin to stream in, Spano said. Reports of price gouging should be directed to city officials.

Officials encouraged residents to watch out for each other as restoration efforts continued. “Please check on your neighbors,” Spano said.
