The city held its 59th annual St. Patrick's Day Parade on McLean Avenue, uniting everyone in a sea of green. This was the first parade since the South Broadway St. Patrick's Day Parade and the McLean Avenue St. Patrick's Day Parade merged in December of 2013.
The parade was led by the grand marshal, the Rev. Thomas Collins, president of Stepinac High School in White Plains, and his aides: Seamus Clarke, Agnes Delaney, Scott Griffith, Kevin Hartnett, Thomas Hewitt, William Mooney, Allison Mosher Burke and Nuala Purcell.
Chase Danger and Smacky of Suburbia Roller Derby, based in Yonkers, said they were excited to march in the parade.
"We're excited to be in our community," Danger said. "This is one of the most fun parades to be a part of. It's such a beautiful day."
John Morrison brought his family to the parade, having grown up in Yonkers watching the South Broadway parades.
"We want to see our friends who march in it," Morrison said.
Organizers say the parade, which attracted more than 15,000 spectators, is about honoring St. Patrick, the patron Saint of Ireland and of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York, as well as to celebrate the history, culture and tradition of the Irish throughout Yonkers.
The first St. Patrick's Day Parade in Yonkers was held in 1857.
