Yonkers Celebrates 'Majestic' Hudson River

YONKERS, N.Y. – Steve Sansone says the Yonkers waterfront should be one of the many waterways tri-state residents should celebrate.

“The water's majestic down here,” he said.

Sansone is the executive director of the Yonkers Downtown Waterfront Business Improvement District and one of a small and enthusiastic group of people who came down to the Hudson River on Sunday to celebrate the Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance's Fifth Annual City of Water Day.

The event took place throughout the New York City region, from Staten Island to Brooklyn to Manhattan. Yonkers' outdoor festival was the only Westchester event.

Along with Sansone, representatives from the Hudson River Museum, Bash the Trash, the Beczak Environmental Education Center and the Science Barge all put on special events to celebrate the Hudson River along the Yonkers Pier.

Bash the Trash, an environmental arts group, performed songs on recycled instruments. They also gave kids a chance to make their own instruments. Nemo, the popular Disney character, was also on hand to greet kids.

Sansone said he hoped this wouldn't be the last City of Water day. He said events like Sunday's and the daylighting project – uncovering parts of the Saw Mill River that run through the city – were drawing more and more residents down to the waterfront.

“Last night we had a good thousand people here for a salsa event, and every Friday night in the summer it's very busy,” he said.
