Thousands In Yonkers Brace For Cold Week With No Heat

YONKERS, N.Y. – Thousands of Yonkers residents are facing a week of near-freezing temperatures with no way to heat their homes.

While weather forecasters have projected temperatures to bottom out in the low 30’s in the days ahead, more than 13,000 city residents were still without power - or heat - Sunday morning.

Sitting inside the Peter Chema Senior Community Center, one of the city’s designated “charging stations,” Cindy Pramann said she has stocked up on blankets and has been boiling water to make her home more humid as her thermostat continues to drop.

“It’s been very difficult but we’re taking it day-by-day,” Pramann said as she and her son, 7-year-old Michael Del Vecchio, snacked on burritos and charged their electronics.

On Sunday, weather forecasters projected high temperatures to top out in the mid-40s and overnight lows to dip into the 30’s.

Ralph Bernard’s home in the Mohegan Heights neighborhood of Yonkers lost heat when the power went out last week and he said his family have been bundling up ever since.

“There’s not much you can do except wear a lot of layers when you go to sleep,” he said last week while picking up dry ice for his refrigerator.

The cold temperatures have already claimed one life as an elderly man in New Jersey died of hypothermia, according to reports.

Pramann said Con Edison’s latest estimates don’t have power returning to her Ludlow Park home for another week. If that’s the case, she said her family may soon have to look for a hotel to stay to escape the cold.

Still, despite the circumstances, Pramann said she felt blessed.

“It’s cold, it’s an inconvenience but we’re okay,” she said. “I feel like we’re blessed because we’re okay.”
