Westchester County District Attorney Anthony Scarpino, Jr. announced on Thursday that Yonkers resident Emily Dearden has been sentenced to three and a half years in state prison after pleading guilty in February to first-degree attempted assault, a violent felony.
At approximately 4 a.m. on Nov. 14, 2013, the victim, Kenneth Dearden, woke up with a pain on the left side of his head, Scarpino said. After calling police and being transported to the hospital by EMS, it was determined that Dearden had been shot in the head.
At the time of the shooting, the couple’s children were sleeping a few feet away, Scarpino said.
Scarpino added that Dearden was transferred to the trauma center, spending eight days at the Westchester Medical Center, where he underwent surgery to remove a .22 caliber bullet from his jaw. Detectives proceeded to obtain a search warrant and investigated at the crime scene.
A week after the shooting, Emily Dearden was arrested and charged with the violent felony. She has been remanded to the custody of the New York State Department of Corrections.
