After a lengthy investigation, information was developed and the crucifix was recovered by Yonkers Police detectives on Tuesday, June 21. No arrest has been made at this time in connection with the burglary.
Detectives and Police Commissioner Charles Gardner presented the crucifix to the Rev. Maurice Moreau, the pastor, on the steps of the church.
Numerous other items which had been taken from this church during the burglary had already been recovered during the initial stages of the investigation.
Gardner said that pressure from the investigating detectives may have forced the suspects to discard some of the smaller items, which included a chalice.
The large crucifix (approximately 46 inches by 24 inches and weighing 80 pounds) was the last of the stolen items to be returned to the church.
It had been hanging above the church altar at the time it was stolen.
