While he is being investigated internally by two lieutenants in the department, town officials have appointed Mount Pleasant Judge Robert Ponzini to lead a separate, independent probe, according to a lohud report.

The nature of the independent investigation was not clear, and town officials have not yet laid out a timetable regarding the probe moving forward. Bonci is not facing any charges from within the department, and he has remained on the job throughout the entirety of the investigation into the incident.

Keith Bonci, 19, turned himself into police custody on July 24 after the chief’s .25-caliber handgun was found unloaded in his girlfriend’s car in New Rochelle. He faces a felony count of criminal possession of a firearm. He has pleaded not guilty to the charge and is due back in court on Sept. 17.
