The project’s goal is to promote biking along the trail while making neighborhoods in the area more desirable, according to lohud.com, which reported that a tract of land off Lawrence Street will be turned into a park along the new trail.
Groundwork Hudson Valley and the city of Yonkers are heading the project, which was boosted last year by a $394,000 grant from the New York Regional Economic Development Councils, according to lohud.com, which reported that the grant was awarded to facilitate the first phase of the trail.
Ultimately, it is hoped the project will connect Getty Square to the 242nd Street subway station at Broadway in the Bronx, according to lohud.com.
The new trail will be separate from the South County Trailway, which connects Van Cortlandt and Tibbetts Brook parks in the Bronx and Yonkers, respectively, with the town of Greenburgh, according to lohud.com.
