"I am proud to live in a place where we already offer the maximum allowable city tax exemption to veterans," McLaughlin said in a statement. "Some gave all and all gave some for this country and we owe them a debt which can never be fully repaid. I hope my colleagues will join me in giving back to them by supporting this measure to grant veterans a benefit which they so bravely earned."
Current veterans tax exemptions in Yonkers include a 15 percent reduction in assessment value for veterans who served during a time of war, an additional 10 percent for those who were in combat zones, plus another additional reduction for veterans with a disability rating from the Department of Veterans Affairs. The city also has opted-in to the special Cold War veterans property tax exemption as well the one for Gold Star families.
McLaughlin's proposal is expected to be discussed at an upcoming Rules Committee meeting of the City Council.
