YONKERS, N.Y. Yonkers residents and people from the surrounding communities will have a chance to sail the Hudson River on New Jerseys official tall ship and the best part: Its for a good cause.
The Beczak Environmental Education Center in Yonkers will host the Hudson River Sunset Sail from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday to benefit the centers many environmental education programs.
The local community can benefit from having a river right in their backyard to learn from, but a lot of people dont even know its there, said Victoria Garufi, director of education and outreach at the center.
With the purchase of a $50 ticket, guests will board the A.J. Meerwald, a turn-of-the-century restored schooner, and spend the night touring the Palisades cliffs, and even getting a chance to raise sails and steer the ship, Garufi said.
Garufi said the fundraiser, which was first held two years ago, is mostly an adult event and guests are welcome to bring their own wine and snacks. Although the event wasnt held last year, the Sunset Sail two years ago was a sold-out success, and Garufi said she expects this years fundraiser to sell out as well.
The center has been around for 23 years and offers several programs for children from preschool to high school age. Many of the programs offer hands-on interaction with the Hudson River and the plants and animals in the ecosystem, Garufi said.
